Seven medical start-ups to pitch at the Innovation Showcase

by

The Innovation Showcase takes place on 8 December at the Convention Centre Dublin where companies will be exhibiting new innovations in healthcare and other sectors

At the event there will be a Big Ideas session where 12 investor-ready start-ups, with six belonging to the medical sector, will have two minutes to pitch their innovative products to investors.

The six medical application start-ups who will be pitching their products are:

1. SelfSense Technologies and its SmartSplint which is a wearable splint device that uses inbuilt sensors to measure the forces being exerted on teeth during grinding and where those forces are being applied. The information that SmartSplint provides will enable dentists to plan and discuss personalised treatments with patients.

2. Class Medical with the Trans-Urethral Catheterisation Safety Syringe (TUCSS) valve that make urinary catheterisation safer. The pressure-sensitive TUCSS valve provides a visual cue so medical practitioners can ensure correct positioning of the catheter before inflating the anchoring balloon.

3. Kite Medical with its medical device for non-invasive screening of urinary influx in children. This device is worn as a belt during urination to screen for reflux and then be used to monitor follow-up care.

4. ProVerum Medical and its eponymous device to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) where the prostate gland enlarges and compresses the urethra, resulting in frequent urination, weak urinary flow and, in severe cases, kidney failure. This device is built to expand the urethra, can be implanted under local anaesthetic and made using a biocompatible material and structure to ensure that it will not migrate or become encrusted.

5. Signum Surgical and its small implant to treat perianal fistula. The device helps to close the internal opening of the fistula tract to prevent re-infection and promote healing of the tract, while maintaining the continence of the patient. The implant is also designed to be easy to deliver, with minimal surgical skill required.

6. Sive Medical’s and the SecuRetract which is a minimally invasive disposable retractor for laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. This device minimises trauma on entry with a thinner instrument port requirement and according to Sive Medical eliminates the risk of injury to internal organs.
