5 game-changing medical devices from the last 10 days

MPN looks back at a handful of newly announced medical devices from the last 10 days.

1 - Eargo

Eargo is a new hearing device designed for people who experience, mild to moderate, hearing loss and don’t want to use normal hearing aids.

The Eargo hearing devices, are virtually invisible.  Combining high-end consumer electronics aesthetics with medical device engineering, Eargo devices are packed with technology, yet tiny enough to hide inside the ear.  

2 - Esophageal Cooling Device (ECD)

The ECD is used to cool patient body temperature via the oesophagus. It is a disposable, single use device that has three channels, two of which are for running fluids and the third one for drainage and decompression. It has just been FDA-approved.

3 - BrainPort V100

The BrainPort V100 is a non-surgical, non-invasive assistive aid that translates visual images of the user’s environment into electro-tactile signals displayed on the user’s tongue. With supervised training, users learn to interpret the electro-tactile signals to perceive shape, size, location, and motion of surrounding objects.

4 - The mysterious 'Google Wristband'

Google confirmed plans for a healthcare wearable device. But don't assume that this is an Apple Watch rival. Google X (the R&D arm of Google) has a Life Science division, who made it very clear that this device is intended strictly for medical research.

5 - Esysta - the bluetooth insulin pen

Esysta claims to be the first validated plug-and-play diabetes management system. It uses a transmitting insulin pen, which automatically transfers the data.
