Winners announced for The Grand Award of Design 2019

Cellink have won The Grand Award of Design 2019 for its 3D bioprinter Bio X for human tissue.

Cellink, a company that design and develop bioprinting technology, developed the printer alongside Semcon, a product development company’s design department.

Semcon has a design division which employs around 100 people across four Nordic offices. Semcon works with the three different design approaches: UX design, product design and technical design. The company has a set of specialists within each of the three fields. Semcon’s aim was to create a user-friendly printer with an original exterior.

The Swedish Teknikföretagen’s Grand Award of Design highlights design as a factor that is prominent to remain competitive and profitable. The award is handed out yearly by a jury of design experts.

Markus Grip, senior product designer at Semcon said: “This is an important award that shows how design work has helped the launch of a fantastic innovation in a credible and user-friendly way.”

The Bio X 3D bioprinter uses a unique bioink to print human tissue, and  Cellink, the company behind this innovation were the first company in the world to manufacture bioink.

This printer is able to be used within life science research in order to allow medical tests to be carried out on human tissue instead of animals or humans.

The motivation of the jury:

”Cellink has not only created a revolutionary bioprinter, they have also made it accessible for researchers through an extensive cost efficient cooperation. By creating a smart futuristic design with a low threshold for the user, Cellink has opened up for solving complex problems.”
