Raumedic Expands in Germany and Reaches B Braun Production Milestone

German manufacturer Raumedic has made two announcements recently. First it will invest €26 mn  in a new building with cleanroom manufacturing and office space. Second, the company has reached a major production milestone for a B Braun catheter connector. Raumedic is a specialist producer of polymer components and systems in extrusion, injection moulding, and assembly for the medical and pharmaceutical industries.

Expansion

The company is expanding its headquarters in Bavaria. Final completion of the work is scheduled for 2014.

Since 2004 Raumedic says it has delivered a high rate of growth every year. Sales and employee figures have more than doubled since then. “New contracts for well-known medical technology and pharmaceutical firms together with the implementation of new technologies have provided the cornerstones for our growth plans,” says Martin Bayer, director at Raumedic.

Over 100 new jobs for office and laboratory staff in addition to more than 90 plant jobs will be created in the new building that will be located right next to the head office of Raumedic.

Milestone

Raumedic has reported the production of the 50 millionth Perifix catheter connector for B Braun. Perifix is a catheter connector for anaesthetic devices.

A few years ago the marketing and development department of B Braun initiated a development project to completely reconfigure the design of the Perifix connector, making it simpler and easier to handle and use for physicians and patients.

Working with Raumedic, the companies came up with an idea to provide a safe closure for the catheter connector with a simple "click and ready". This concept has become a remarkable product and production concept. The result was a product that is characterised by its ergonomic design and easy and intuitive management. Haptic and acoustic feedback about the closing of the connector gives the user the guarantee that a firm and reliable connection has been established with the Perifix catheter.

The new catheter connector now only consists of three individual components, instead of five as the predecessor model did. Raumedic fashioned the bottom part of the catheter connector in the 2K (twin shot) injection moulding method, combining a hard base with a soft component made from high-performance TPE, which was specially developed for this application. The assembly of the components, including a 100% in-process control with camera systems, is performed in a fully automated manner directly adjacent to the injection moulding area of Raumedic.
