Prosthetic hands get Disney artwork

Superhero and Disney-themed prosthetic hands are being created for children by Bristol-based Open Bionics

The Walt Disney Company has donated both royalty-free licenses and artwork from its creative team for the hands that are created by Open Bionics.

The artwork and designs are based on the Star Wars, Iron Man/Avengers and Frozen films.

The Avengers artwork follows the design of Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit, while the Star Wars artwork has been designed in collaboration with Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB. The Frozen artwork is inspired by the popular festive film.

Open Bionics creates bionic prosthetic hands through 3D printing two component parts and then fitting the electronics into the palm of the hand.

A statement on the Open Bionic’s website said: “Now kids can get excited about their prosthetics. They won’t have to do boring physical therapy, they’ll train to become heroes.

“They’re not just getting medical devices, they’re getting bionic hands inspired by their favourite characters. The Walt Disney Company is generously donating the time of its creative teams and providing royalty free licenses. More designs coming soon!”
