Packaging company ships over three million face shields to help with pandemic

Thermoformed packaging company Lacerta has managed to ship over three million Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) face shields to healthcare and frontline workers, in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Lacerta has undertaken the initiative as a humanitarian response to Covid-19. It’s face shield for medical purposes is made from PET material.

It is intended for single use and has been authorised by the FDA under an Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) for use by healthcare providers as PPE.

The Covid-19 pandemic has created an acute shortfall in needed protective wear. In response, Lacerta has rapidly developed a face shield to offer to hospitals, healthcare professionals and frontline workers. 

Shield production started towards the end of March, with additional production getting underway at the end of last week at its Chatsworth facility in California.

The company is currently producing 300,000 shields per day with the capabilities to create 500,000 per day. So far, 120,000 face shields have been made available to healthcare institutions.

The shields are made of a piece of plastic with slots cut in the back where users can attach the band together. A second piece can be worn to keep the shield away from the face.

A statement from Lacerta management said: “We saw the shortages and the need to get PPE to healthcare workers immediately. We’re fortunate to be in a position to react quickly and efficiently in this time of crisis. We produce the anti-fog plastic in-house, eliminating lengthy lead times and we are able to promptly scale up to meet the demand. Our hope in producing these face shields is to reach as many of our nation’s frontline workers to help to protect them as they work to protect us.”
