...Devices for cardiology

Cardiology was at the heart of some of the great medical innovation for 2015.

Philips showed up at the ESC Congress 2015 with a host of new products for ‘digital cardiology’.

New launches for the firm included ultrasound imaging tool HeartModel, which offers automated 3D views and advanced quantification, will make its European debut at the Philips stand. Philips will also offer demonstrations of its advanced imaging and ultrasound products.

“Holistic cardiovascular care looks beyond the disease to understand what really matters for all involved along the patient journey” said Bert van Meurs, General Manager, Image Guided Therapy for Philips.

“Our patient-centric solutions enable novel and effective minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease. These solutions also support physicians when assessing disease states, help decide and guide the right treatment and confirm whether interventions were successful. In addition, our recent acquisition of Volcano will increase our capabilities to deliver this support to both physicians and patients”

Device giant Medtronic also launched Evera MRI SureScan ICD System. This ICD system was designed to overcome the problem of incompatibility with MRI scans.

Michael Gold, chief of cardiology and principal investigator in the Evera MRI clinical trial, said: "Patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest have long relied on ICDs to monitor their hearts, detect dangerous arrhythmias and deliver the life-saving therapy needed to survive.

"Many of these patients also need access to MRIs, so the approval of an ICD that can be used in an MRI environment is crucial, and can help provide patients with the peace of mind that they are receiving the best care available."
