Medica app competition highlights innovation in the medical device sector

The winner of the Medica app competition has been announced following presentations from development teams from all over the world.

Teams competed to create the “Best Medical Mobile Solution” with the victor “Up Right”, a combination of an app and a wearable that aims to help users optimise their posture.

The device vibrates when the user is slouching, helping them maintain a correct posture.

The app can produce a personalised plan for users by utilising the device’s accelerometer and numerous sensors. The company claim that Up Right has received positive feedback and that clinical trials are now being conducted.

Second place was awarded to Biop Medical for its point-of-care testing device for the early diagnosis of cervical cancer. An optical device is used to view the cervix and early diagnosis is based on distinguishing healthy tissue from diseased tissue with a result being produced within minutes.

Tytocare, a company offering a telemedicine solution that enables virtual doctor’s visits and medical examinations to be carried out anywhere at any time, won third place. Also by using associated hardware alongside the app, cardiac and lung function, skin, temperature, throat and nose examinations can be carried out. The company’s Tyto Stethoscope has received FDA approval and other devices are compliant with FDA requirements.

The winners received prizes of €2,000, €1,000 and €500 as well as a boost in reputation that could potentially aid the companies more than the funding.
