What's on the conference stages on Day One at Med-Tech Innovation Expo?

Unsure of which conference sessions to attend during your time at Med-Tech Innovation Expo? There is a large variety of topics across the two stages catering for policy from government departments, intellectual property, supply chain issues, outsourcing, marketing and regulation as well as a wealth of insights from those on the show floor.

Rob Lacey

Here’s a rundown as to what you can expect on Day One:

The Life Sciences Vision and UK MedTech Strategy

An important couple of sessions when it comes to the government’s plans and priorities for using the medical technology as a lever for growth in the UK economy – we are lucky to have two speakers commenting on this area.

Heather Hobson, head of regulation, access and growth at the Office for Life Sciences, will provide a keynote session on The Life Sciences vision, updating us on the government’s progress and explaining how it supports medical technology. It will provide an insight into government priorities for the sector as well as a progress update on the key themes of the Vision. This session will provide detail on how the Vision is supporting medtech.

Following the recent announcement of the UK government’s MedTech Strategy, we are joined by the Director of Medical Technology from the Department for Health and Social Care who will provide a progress update on the implementation initiatives to fulfil the vision. His session will take place immediately after Heather Hobson’s.

Trade

The recently renamed Department for Business and Trade will delve into the future of UK medtech. Mark Oakes, head of life sciences (exports) will explain the department’s range of levers to support a thriving UK medtech sector in the coming years, and examples of opportunities to export to key markets such as the USA. He will also speak to how the sector is evolving and the potential the UK has to advance its leading position in research and innovation.

Leading topics

Away from our government speakers on Day One, the main stage features a headline session on one of the big pan-industry buzzwords: sustainability. We have an hour-long session from Michelle Sullivan from Boston Scientific, who will explain how to go about making net zero healthcare a reality, and what medical technology companies need to do to realise this ambition.

Speakers from Pennine Healthcare, ORCHA and Marks & Clerk will also provide insight into addressing supply chain concerns, DTAC and the importance of intellectual property, respectively.

Other esteemed speakers include award winning medical device designers as well as one or two nods to our sister show TCT3Sixty.

One year on

For those who attended last year, you might have remembered the packed stage for the live session of The MedTalk Podcast focused on regulation. We’re back again this year as we discuss the latest updates, what the UK regulatory landscape looks like and possible alignments with other authorities. There’s a new face to the panel this year, come by at 12:20 on the Introducing Health-Tech Stage to find out more.

The show floor

There’s some really exciting insight from those on the show floor across our Introducing Health-Tech Stage. If you don’t know where to start and who to visit first when you come into Hall 2, then taking a look at the programme on the Introducing Health-Tech Stage is probably a good place to start with sessions covering product design, metrology, developing devices for LMICs, smart medical devices and more!

PLUS

Strictly speaking, this isn’t part of the conference session, but I can’t ignore the exciting product launch as the team from AND Technology Research launch Tento+ at Connect Lounge on the show floor. This will include a demonstration of the product, speeches from CEO Dr Nicola Thorn, Sue Spencer head of IVD at Qserve Group before Retro Games and Refreshments – you can read more about that here, and the event takes place at 2pm!
