How Covid-19 is impacting the medtech industry

Munich-based software start-up Climedo Health has published a whitepaper assessing the "Impact of Covid-19 on the medtech industry".

The paper analyses four major areas that are being significantly affected by the outbreak.

The first part of the document addresses how the combination of global supply chain disruptions, and the increase in demand for certain products such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ventilators has led to massive shortages in certain areas.

The second part analyses other medtech sectors which are experiencing a temporary decline in demand due to the pandemic. This refers to instruments such as those used in elective procedures, which are currently being postponed.

The report also looks at some innovative diagnostic and treatment examples which could serve as inspiration for companies, and concludes by addressing the consequences of the postponement of EU Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR), which is mainly as a result of Covid-19.

Veronika Schweighart, co-founder and COO of Climedo said: "In addition to the dramatic consequences for our society and economy, the Covid-19 crisis has exposed many flaws in our global healthcare system.

"What’s interesting, however, is that the virus has served as a wake-up call for many and, in some cases, has accelerated digital transformation in a way that would have taken much longer under normal circumstances.

“As this will certainly not be our last pandemic, we will hopefully be (even) better prepared next time. With more transparency, more efficient processes and an openness towards digital solutions, many of the problems that companies are currently experiencing could be avoided or at least solved more quickly in future.”
