Life science firms dominate UK disruptive businesses list

Life science firms are being recognised as some of the most disruptive businesses in the UK according to Virgin Media Business.

Revealed alongside research and events company Fast Track, and published in the 21st annual edition of the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100, the Virgin Media Business Disruptor 10 examines companies from multiple sectors that are seizing market share.

The list recognises companies that have a business model, product or service that is close to creating a new market, or that can transform existing markets.

Health technology companies are prominently featured throughout the list highlighting the sector’s growing market.

Included amongst those selected is the mobile health app babylon, which lets users check symptoms and consult GPs in an effort to make healthcare accessible. The service launched to NHS patients in London in November and is valued at around $200 million.

Cambridge Medical Robotics was also selected for its efforts in bringing low-cost, portable surgical robots to hospitals. The company wants to make keyhole surgery more accessible to patients and has so far raised $46 million.

Lastly for the health technology companies is Ieso Digital Health, an online mental health service. The company offers therapy for common mental health conditions and is hoping to cut treatment times and costs for NHS patients.

Peter Kelly, managing director of Virgin Media Business, said: “We are delighted to reveal this year’s finalists who have seen an opportunity and made it their purpose to either disrupt long established markets and practices or create entirely new ones to great success. For us at Virgin Media Business it is our purpose to help all businesses fulfil their digital potential and we recognise how much digital advancement has been a key focus for these new and disruptive companies.”

One national winner will receive a special award from Virgin Media Business at the Fast Track 100 national awards dinner in May next year, hosted by Richard Branson.
