Former international rugby professional inspires injection moulding customers

Sean Fitzpatrick, a former captain of the New Zealand All Blacks international rugby team, attended injection moulding machine specialist, Sumitomo (SHI) Demag’s 6th annual getActive day to inspire guests with advice on setting the benchmark for excellence, and how to create and sustain high performance in both sport and business.

This year’s event was chosen to be held at the 6,730 square metre facility - Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Sheffield, as UK managing director Nigel Flowers believes it is, “a world class technology centre.” The centre has completed, “extensive research into the connections between human and machine collaboration and the growing need for high variation and mass customisation manufacturing”, according to Flowers.

Additionally, the AMRC consists of multiple research hubs, and technology focused on digitally assisted assembly, component manufacturing and machine technologies.

Fitzpatrick presented each guest with a personalised signed copy of his new book, ‘Winning Matters’ whilst emphasising the importance of remembering your losses. Fitzpatrick said, “there’s more to be learned from losses; you should never forget how that felt so you don’t want to have that feeling again.”

Michael Curtis, director at MCPC commented: “The AMRC is a fantastic facility. It is conducting some very interesting collaborative research and work. The guest speaker was simply fantastic giving some great inside stories of a sport I love. More importantly, Fitzpatrick revealed the thoughts, ideas, tactics, mind set and philosophy that it takes to be a successful and sustainable team for the long term.”

Flowers concluded: “Another fascinating and insightful day spent with likeminded professionals from our plastics community. The biggest personal takeaway for me was in order to sustain high performance we cannot afford to get complacent about technology or our team culture.”

Sponsor partners for the getActive 2019 event included Mouldshop, Plastribution, Piovan, Sierra 57 Consult and Sepro Group.

Sumitomo (SHI) Demag supply injection moulding machines to the medical industry. This year’s getActive day celebration follows the organisation’s recent announcement of its fully automated in mould decorating production cell.
