axial3D awarded ‘Best Use of AI in Health’

Medical 3D printing firm, axial3D, has been awarded ‘Best use of Data Science/AI in Health/Wellbeing’ at this year’s European DatSci Awards, for the company’s use of machine learning in the medical 3D printing workflow.

The European DatSci Awards aims to celebrate and connect the most talented data scientists and their teams from across Europe, as well as demonstrating the power of data science and artificial intelligence by driving business, educational and social outcomes.

By giving clinicians improved access to 3D printing, axial3D aims to bridge the gap between technology and medicine. 3D printed models will enable clinicians to gain vital insights ahead of surgical procedures, and as a result could provide patients with more information, allowing more communication ahead of complex surgeries. It is thought 3D printing could also potentially change patient outcomes.

Daniel Crawford, founder and chief strategy officer at axial3D commented: “When you look at the scale of surgery, there are 3 million operations per year. If we want 3D printed organs to be the norm – to unlock that market – we must automate this process. Luckily there are generalisable features in any person’s anatomy – in other words, commonalities with how their heart or spine will look. We can use previous scan files to train a classifier to label images.”

axial3D believe this accolade shows the genuine impact 3D printing will make for both clinicians and patients in the years to come.
