ABLE Spacer effective against human coronavirus

Silver ions in the polymer of Clement Clarke International’s ABLE Spacer have anti-microbial properties, and recent tests conducted in the EU revealed that Human Coronavirus on the surface of this plastic is neutralised within eight hours.

Tests conducted, on behalf of Clement Clarke International, at eight hours post contamination showed a reduction of the coronavirus sample against the control of 97.49%.

This means that between a morning dose of inhaled medication and an evening dose the anti-microbial in ABLE Spacer can largely neutralise Coronavirus contamination making it safer for ongoing use. ABLE Spacer (and its sister product A2A Spacer) are the only spacer devices to incorporate an anti-microbial activity. The anti-microbial activity of ABLE Spacer has previously been demonstrated with bacteria as well.

Spacers are widely used to facilitate the delivery of inhaled medications from pressurised inhalers. Regular cleaning of spacers is recommended by manufacturers and in treatment guidelines. Studies have previously shown that spacers can become contaminated in use.  ABLE Spacer and A2A Spacer are available on UK prescription and also available in many countries across Europe, Australia and Canada.

It does not reduce the need for spacers to be washed regularly but it does help cover the periods between washes.”
