Yesterday, the first day of Medtec Europe—one of Europe's largest medical technology trade shows—visitors were able to enjoy for the first time a dedicated area of the show to medical plastics.

One of the highlights of the first day for Medical Plastics News editor Sam Anson was the chance to speak to Dr Xiang Zhang of UK materials research and development company Ceram. Dr Zhang is also a fellow of the University of Cambridge.

Dr Zhang told Sam that Ceram had developed a mouldable biodegradable load bearing orthopaedic polymer hybrid material. The material is a combination of hydroxyapetite and a polymer which closely resembles collagen.

Other news from the first day included the announcement from Danish medical compounder Melitek that it had decided to invest in a doubling of compounding capacity at its plant in Denmark. The news was announced exclusively to Medical Plastics News by Jesper Laursen (pictured).
