VELOX - a European distributor of specialty chemicals and resins, hosted several of its suppliers this year's Compamed show.

And what a year it has been! VELOX celebrates its 25th birthday with a large international gathering in the HQ city of Hamburg in September. Since its infancy, VELOX has stayed true to its roots - concentrating on finding and developing new applications for specialty polymers and chemicals. This approach resulted in growing from a 2 person start-up to 220 people across 21 countries in Europe.

Recently acquired by Rotterdam-based IMCD Group, VELOX position as a leading European supplier of Medical-grade polymers is expected to go from strength to strength. IMCD has grown globally in the sales and marketing of specialty chemicals. With own laboratory facilities they have created a strong presence in the areas of food additives, coatings and plastics. With IMCD's proven track record in the business development and supply of pharmaceutical ingredients, there is a profound understanding of the unique requirements in medical devices and pharmaceutical markets.

According to VELOX Siobhan Bastiansen, Market Manager Medical: “Compamed is truly a global show and we are very pleased that we hosted a selection of our suppliers onto the booth. We enjoyed sharing the latest highlights from our polymer portfolio such as:

"Repsol is one of the leading energy groups and one of the top private oil companies in the world with presence in key areas of high potential in the international energy map and with its Repsol Healthcare® series, Repsol is now a player in the medical device space with a total of 28 grades compromising Polyethylene, EVA Co-polymers and Polypropylene (including gamma resistance). Just recently Repsol has been bestowed the 'PP Best Polymer Producer Award for Europe 2018' as a result of an online survey carried out by EuPC among polymers customers across Europe.

"Trinseo, a leading global materials company, produces medical grade Polycarbonate, PC Alloys, ABS and PS, with bio-compatibility according to ISO 10993 standards. The grades are offered under the brand names CALIBRE™ Polycarbonate Resins, CALIBRE™ MEGARAD™ Polycarbonate, EMERGE® Advanced Resins (PC/ABS, PC/PET) and MAGNUM™ ABS Resins. These materials find their way into single – and multiple use devices as well as equipment housings. Especially Trinseo’s EMERGE™ PC/PET 9000CR series not only meets the need for today’s medical housings to withstand powerful disinfectants and cleaners that can attack plastic surfaces, but also provides advanced properties for a better functionality, reliability and a prolonged lifecycle of the housings. Trinseo's recent acquisition of specialist TPE supplier API means that elastomers are now in the Trinseo portfolio.

"IPC - Innovative Polymer Compounds, the Irish ISO 13485 polymer compounder, will be at hand to showcase the latest polymers, additives and pigments it is working with.

"Arkema's new PEBAX® MED grades offering higher burst strength for angioplasty balloons address a request for ever-higher performance in this demanding application. The hydrophilic and breathable grade PEBAX® MV1074 SA01 MED can also lend anti-static properties when blended with a range of other polymers. These properties can add valuable functionality to dispensers, packaging and other liquid handling devices.

"TOPAS joined us on our booth with classical parts such as vials and syringes in TOPAS® COC. In addition we saw examples of films showing the unique properties of TOPAS® ELASTOMER - a water-clear, high purity soft polymer with no plasticiser and an array of unique features of particular interest to the pharmaceutical sector.

"Lubrizol Life Sciences was present on the VELOX booth as well as on their own stand. Compamed is the perfect opportunity to meet the global-responsible personnel driving Lubrizol's increasing presence in Life Sciences. Their portfolio has already extended from the leading medical TPU brands - to contract manufacturing of implantable and non-implantable devices. Customers using Lubrizol TPUs can also find out the latest status of the transition of the manufacturing site of Pellethane and Isoplast grades from Texas to Ohio, US.

"The most recent addition to our medical portfolio is the Ixef® PARA material from Solvay. This material is an excellent solution for metal replacement in single use surgical tools. The 50% glass fibre reinforced material offers very good mechanical strength, rigidity and very good surface properties. This high flow resin is ideal even for very complex parts.

"Whatever the interest in medical or pharmaceutical polymers, we are keen to extend our cooperation and look forward to interesting and technical exchanges”.
