The first thing Andria Diaz heard after she had a cochlear implant fitted was a marriage proposal
Diaz had the implant fitted at the University of Mississippi Medical Centre and as soon as her long-term boyfriend Kevin Peakman had established she could hear, he got down on one knee to propose.
Diaz had a cochlear implant fitted to replace the function of her damaged inner ear by Vicki Gonzales an audiologist at the University of Mississippi Medical Centre.
In the video Diaz is slightly overwhelmed by the new sounds that she can hear, including the sound of her own voice and begins to cry with happiness.
To add another layer of emotion to the moment Peakman got down onto one knee, he asked: “Hey, can you hear me?”
Diaz said: “Yeah it sounds funny.”
Peakman continued: “Does it sound okay? Yeah? Baby, I wanted to make one of the first things that you hear, because I love you so much and you're my best friend baby, I wanted to make the first thing you hear be me asking you to marry me."
She heard and after throwing her arms around him and crying a little more, accepted his proposal.
