Could this be a safer alternative to traditional mechanical valves?

A large fraction of the waste produced during surgery is in the form of liquids such as blood and bodily fluids that have been diverted during the operation. A single surgery can produce as much as three to four litres of liquid waste which is often disposed of by either manually pouring out the contents of the suction canisters, or by solidifying the contents before disposal. Both of these methods can pose significant health and safety risks as spills and splatters can easily occur (even in the solidified state), leading to the aerosolization of bloodborne pathogens.

A key component of canister design is the valve which is found embedded in the lid. The function of this valve is to maintain system integrity and prevent over spilling which ensures the safety of both the vacuum system lines and the users by sealing off the cannister. Adding a mechanical valve in suction canister design can prove costly due to complex designs and increased risk of failure due to several moving components. Working closely with the medical device manufacturer, Porvair Sciences has developed a high-performance vent using their proprietary Vyon porous plastic. 

Vyon sintered porous plastics claim to offer chemical compatibility, strength and resistance to most acids, bases, many organic chemicals and temperatures up to 110ºC (230ºF). Produced in both sintered porous polyethylene and polypropylene, Vyon sintered porous plastic is a versatile material that can be manufactured in a variety of shapes and sizes. 

Both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) have approved the narrow-controlled pore size distribution of Vyon sintered porous plastic. Porvair Sciences claim that this pore size (10-100 micron) is responsible for ensuring an efficient and effective filtration material, and ensures low pressure drop and even flow.

In a medical device application, the unique liquid-swelling properties of the Vyon composite-based filter allow it to act as a vent that provides both optimal airflow and an effective seal, keeping fluids contained within the suction canister. In this novel medical device, when collected liquid reaches critical levels and comes into contact with the Vyon, the filters inherent shut-off capabilities prevent unwanted fluid transmission.

The Vyon fluid collection vents can be used as recyclable single use products and aim to provide an alternative to traditional mechanical valves.
