The Brazilian portfolio at Medica, Dusseldorf will highlight innovation and R&D investment
ABIMO (the Brazilian Medical Devices Manufacturers Association) studies have shown that innovation is considered essential by the Brazilian industry in the sector.
At least 80% of companies have their own R&D departments and more than two thirds have a strategic innovation plan.
“In the current global trade scenario of competition and dynamism, investing in innovation is a necessity and Brazil’s health products and equipment industry already knows it, as evidenced by our research”, says Clara Porto, the ABIMO marketing and exports manager.
“Recognising this, ABIMO created the Health Innovation Prize back in 2010, to honour the most innovative solutions offered by the Brazilian industry,” she adds.

Magnamed creates lung ventilator and anaesthesia solutions. The OxyMag is a portable ventilator, while the FlexiMag Plus is an ICU ventilator. OxyMag has an intuitive, user friendly interface to make it easier and faster to use in emergencies. The company won the Innovating Health Prize in 2013.
Timpel won the Innovating Health Prize in 2015 for its Timpel Enlight 1800, a bedside lung monitor for use in hospital environments. The device provides real-time imaging of lung ventilation/perfusion distribution, making it possible to identify collapses and alveolar hyperdistention, filling assynchronisms, pneumothorax, selective intubation and lung perfusion alterations, among others.
Duan International developed the Venoscópio, a creative and inexpensive tool that shines LED lights onto the skin, permeating the subcutaneous tissue by up to 5mm. It highlights veins, allowing the health professional to identify the three main parameters for a good venepuncture: real vein calibre/diameter, pathways/branching, and existing permeability/obstructions. The image of the vein is direct, not reflected, which reduces the risk of error.
Ibramed, a manufacturer of rehabilitation and aesthetic medicine equipment, developed a product especially for the Rio 2016 Olympics – the Neurodyn Aussie Sport. This product accelerates athletes’ recovery process after an injury, It is mainly indicated for muscular strengthening, motor re-education, reducing oedemas and modulating pain.
Corcam innovated with the Nexcor, a system that brings current hospital technology to users, getting cardiac patients close to their physicians. The monitor can identify infarction in its initial phase and rare arrhythmia syndromes using software that sends real-time patient data to a centre that passes on the information to the respective physicians.
Developed over the course of five years of research, the new heart monitor can detect falls, has a GPS to locate patients who have lost consciousness and a panic button to call for help with one touch, in addition to sending alerts in the event of infarction or arrhythmia.
Scitech was the first company in South America to develop a pharmacological stent, an implantable product for the treatment of coronary diseases. The company was also a pioneer in the region, in developing a non-pharmacological coronary stent and accessories for interventionist cardiology.
