ZedScan uses Electrical Impedence Spectroscopy (EIS) to identify and differentiate cervical tissue types according to their electrical properties.
These properties are known to change during the development of neoplasia, with more dysplastic cells exhibiting a reduced resistance to the flow of current as a result of structural changes.
Clinicians at a UK NHS clinic have been using ZedScan alongside colposcopy over a period of 18 months assessing the impact on the patient pathway for women referred with abnormal cytology.
Performance data on 1,052 women revealed a 12.4% increase in the detection of high grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (HG CIN) following the introduction of ZedScan into routine use.
There was also a 57.4% increase in the number of cases of high-grade disease detected in women referred with mild or borderline abnormalities.
The report showed that adoption of ZedScan created opportunities for treatment at first visit.
